A Level Rank Point Calculation

New JC Scoring System in Singapore

With the rise of MOE’s pivoted focus towards students’ development in the 21st Century Competencies (21CC), the curricular content of the A-level systems are diverting to a more hollistic approach that allows students to explore their passions and interests outside of their academic achievements.

Today, the curricular content of most of the A-level syllabuses is already similar or narrower than the international syllabuses used as benchmarks for comparison.

One of the new changes implemented by MOE in this redirection is the new scoring system that starts from the 2024 JC1 intake.

New Scoring System

Changes_to_A_Level_Curriculum_and_Autonomous_University_Admissions

Currently, all junior college and Millennia Institute students applying to enter autonomous universities are required to include the following subjects in the computation of their University Admission Score (UAS).

1) General Paper (GP): Involves essay writing, comprehension and knowledge of current affairs in English.
2) Project Work (PW): Requires students to work together in a group to complete a project.
3) Four content-based subjects (”H” subjects) based on students’ choice:
For content-based subjects, students may choose to take either 3 H2 + 1 H1 subjects or 4 H2 subjects.
For students who take four H2 subjects, their lowest-scoring subject in the A-Level examinations is considered as an H1 subject for the purpose of computing the score.

Current Scoring System

This is the grading chart for the current system, with the maximum of 90 points.

H2 Subjects H1 Subjects General Paper Project Work
A 20 RP 10 RP 10 RP 10 RP
B 17.5 RP 8.75 RP 8.75 RP 8.75 RP
C 15 RP 7.5 RP 7.5 RP 7.5 RP
D 12.5 RP 6.25 RP 6.25 RP 6.25 RP
E 10 RP 5 RP 5 RP 5 RP
S 5 RP 2.5 RP 2.5 RP 2.5 RP
U O RP O RP O RP O RP

Take note of these new changes

From the JC1 intake in 2024, Project Work (PW) will be removed from the calculation of their university admission score. They will be given a pass or fail instead of letter grades.

And from 2026, students from junior colleges (JCs) and Millennia Institute (MI) will not need to count their fourth content-based subject in their university admissions.

Rebasing for additional included subjects:

- Result of H1 subject (maximum of 10 points) would only be included and rebased to 70 points if it improves the UAS.
- Results of mother tongue language/MTL (maximum of 10 points) would only be included and rebased to 70 points if it improves the UAS.

The new system also places greater importance on the three compulsory H2 subjects included in students' UAS computation, as their scores significantly impact overall performance!
